What if the Ravi rises?

What do these numbers mean?
  • People living there — estimated residents on the blue ground, for the level shown and all lower levels.
  • km² of ground — land lower than the raised water and linked to the river through other low land.
  • km² built-up — the part of that land covered by buildings. A small share means the water mostly reaches farmland and floodplain, not dense city.

These show who lives on low, river-connected ground — not how many people would actually be flooded. Real flooding also depends on how much water arrives, for how long, embankments and drainage. Figures are rounded; elevation data can be off by a metre or more.

How this works

A river reference level is estimated from satellite elevation data along the Ravi's wet channel. For each scenario we raise that level and mark land that is lower than the water and connected to the river through other low land. Isolated hollows are not counted.

Population and built-up area are summed over the exposed ground. Numbers are rounded and indicative.

Not modelled: river discharge, flow speed or timing, rainfall, drainage, and flood embankments (which the 30 m elevation data cannot reliably resolve). Elevation errors of a metre or more are typical.
